The fearless magpies have been a favorite bird of mine since childhood. During my residency in Bears Ears, they were my frequent companions when exploring, seeming to flock together in groups, probably family groups, noisily speaking to me in a language I have yet to understand. I would speak back, asking them what was new. Yes, one talks to all the animals when traveling for days all alone. I started calling them the "Magpie Clan" when ever I saw them, and imagined them as the same family following me or leading me on my adventures.
This piece will be part of my exhibition "Landscape Holds Memory", opening November 13, 2026 at the Sears Art Museum Eccles Foyer Gallery. On exhibit November 13 - January 8, 2027.
