Barn owls were always a welcome site to farmers when I was growing up. They kept the farm and barns fairly free of rodents. They are widely distributed in the U.S. and are about 13-16" in height. They love nesting in barns, hence their name. They frequently hunt at night.
Part of a series of 14 different owls that I painted, the barn owl is one of the most beautiful. Barn owls are medium in size and have a gorgeous heart-shaped face, long ivory to pinkish beak and relatively small dark eyes when compared to other owls.
