Part of a series of 14 different owls that I painted, the great horned owl is a large, bulky owl with prominent ear tufts, whitish throat, dark greyish beak and bright golden eyes. Their feathers are mottled gray and brown, and rusty brown and white feathers on their chest. The young are more orange-brown than adults.
The Great Horned owl species stay in their territory year round. They have long ear tuft feathers, which are widely spaces and face outwards, vs. long-eared owls which are close together and grow upright. They are primarily a nocturnal perch hunter, waiting and watching. Thank you to J.D. Gantz for allowing me to use his photo as reference for this owl.
