Lyrics for Antelope Summer by Rob Scholes:
Well, a monarch butterfly walked into a bar
and through the whiskey, smoke, and neon-shining beer-filled mason jars
the regular crowd glanced up and looked away,
“Go on back to where you came from, we don’t need your kind today”.
Now she’s on her own everywhere she goes.
There’s no friends to make, no hands to shake, no one she really knows.
She’s driven to go on and greet a new dawn every day,
but just once this butterfly would like a place that she could stay.
For tomorrow she flies away to Mexico
She’s just here for the summer now it feels like time to go
Been up and down the seaboard, ended up in Idaho
from the home of the antelope all the way to Mexico.
Well, the pronghorn played guitar in the barbed wire band.
He had a cigarette stuck in the headstock, he sang love songs to the land.
As he tapped his foot he made that six-string ring,
and he made a lonely butterfly stand up and want to sing.
For tomorrow she flies away to Mexico
She’s just here for the summer now it feels like time to go
Been up and down the seaboard, ended up in Idaho
from the home of the antelope all the way to Mexico.
Well now the monarch and the pronghorn they are out beneath the stars,
and that Camas Prairie wind caressed their wildly beating hearts.
There are folks in town who would surely frown to see these two hearts here
But love will find a way to bind what hate wants us to fear.
For if these two should come together, what the hell stops you and me.
We have far more things in common than the things we disagree.
And if a butterfly and an antelope can make a good love song
well, I would like to think that all of us could learn to get along.
For tomorrow she flies away to Mexico
She is just here for the summer but she doesn’t want to go
Been up and down the seaboard, ended up in Idaho
from the home of the antelope all the way to Mexico
from the home of the antelope all the way to Mexico
from the home of the antelope...
