As an Idaho Master Naturalist, I have used nature journaling as a way of capturing my impressions and my experiences in nature. After journaling for some years, I have begun teaching informal nature journaling workshops as a way to teach others how to enjoy this artform and to connect humanity with nature. Capturing nature through words, drawings and data, I build a practice of critical thinking, learning more deeply about natural topics and observing behaviors and concerns about nature conservation.
I'm super honored to be invited to teach nature journaling workshops in Jackson Hole in May 2026 for the JH Birding Festival. More to come on that soon.
Below you will find a short series of 8 nature journaling videos to help you get started with your own journaling journey. I created these videos with artist Karen Jacobsen for our Craters of the Moon Centennial Artist in Residence project in 2024. I hope that you enjoy these. And, at the bottom of the page are images of some of my nature journal entries, and some pictures from the field workshops.
