Thank you for joining my collectors list. I don't send alot of newsletters, but I want you to be updated. Wow! There have been a few weeks when I wasn't sure if we were in early summer or in late winter, but I think that summer has finally settled in. I have lots to tell you about in this newsletter so I had better get started.
Announcing My New Art+Science Migration Connections Project
I wanted to share this news with you first. Later on I will post on Instagram about this. But just this week I began my new project called Migration Connections. Over the next year I'll be partnering with Fish & Game and working on researching the science behind ungulate migrations and studying the different species to create a body of work.
Many species of hooved wild animals are migratory, some more so than others. Even moose, mountain goats and bighorns migrate. But it is more noticeable and well known for deer, elk, and especially pronghorns. The challenges for migration paths continue to grow for these species, affecting their hardiness and ability to survive. Roads, fences, and developments are some primary barriers and challenges for them.
Yesterday I was out in the field with Fish & Game to study the central Idaho paths and look for collared pronghorns. I saw so many pronghorns and some mule deer and was able to watch them navigate some of the obstacles in their path. The highlight for me was seeing two different mama pronghorns with triplets. It's not unheard of to have 3 babies, but it isn't common either.
Oh, those babies were giddy-hearts, jumping, doing zoomies, loving life. It made my heart sing. Stay tuned over the next year as I work on a body of work related to ungulate (hooved wildlife) migrations. I so love wildlife and so I risk boring you with all my stories of researching them in the field, but hopefully the art I develop will be exciting and fresh and connect you with nature. I'll be attending the western biennial pronghorn conference next week and will share insights from that event in my newsletter and on Instagram.
